SOLO SHOW: Paintings by Joanna Strong

ABOUT SPELLBOUND:

An exhibition exploring entanglement and connection, in which objects are seen as magical artifacts and transcendent worlds.

Medium: In these Entanglement paintings, elastic bands from a myriad of sources are entwined to portray mysterious worlds, metaphors for our layered experiences, and for resilience, tension, and complexity.

The Net Project expands this view of material as allegory into the three-dimensional world and is inspired by the handmade fishing nets created by my Newfoundland ancestors. This net of connection has grown through generous contributions of recycled material. In this iteration of the Net project, paintings of emblematic objects are caught and held by the Net.

This exhibition will be a concluding chapter of the Entanglement series, which was launched in a 2008 solo exhibition also at the Artist’s Network.

Currently based in Toronto, Joanna Strong grew up in St. John’s, Nfld. She holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design and an MFA from the University of Waterloo. Her paintings have been shown in over 100 exhibitions and are in many Canadian and international collections.
